A Proposed Policy for Coastal and Marine Resources Management and Protection in the Gulf of Aqaba

The four coastal states of the Gulf of Aqaba increasingly recognize the need to ensure the long-tenn protection of their marine and coastal areas. The general objectives are to develop a base for the rational use and conservation of resources and for improvement of the relationship between humans and the environment and to predict the consequences of today's actions on the world of tomorrow in order to increase our ability to manage the natural resources efficiently.' Such an approach is based on the perspective that man is part of nature and that any development should be planned as "sustainable" in the long run, allowing for the exploitation of resources without cumulative and irreversible degradation.z To achieve this, any human activity must be carefully balanced between economic utilization and the ecological impact that it produces.
