Jumpstarting words: Different word classes and playing with words
Riddling, as we saw in the previous chapter, can be superb fun and is a real favourite with children. This activity focuses on 'concrete nouns' (i.e. people, places, or things).
• Choose a category, e.g. food, names, animals. Write the letters of the alphabet on the wholeclass board. The class now have two minutes to come up with as many words as they can within that category - one noun for each letter of the alphabet. For example, supposing the category were food, the children might come up with something like this:
a - apricot b - banana c - cake d - damson . ..
