ABSTRACT

Wendy Chapkis is an Associate Professor of Women’s Studies and Sociology at the University

of Southern Maine. She is editor of two anthologies published by the Transnational Institute

in Amsterdam, Loaded Questions: women in the military (1979) and Of Common Cloth: women in

the global textile industry (co-edited with Cynthia Enloe; 1983), and author of two books,

Beauty Secrets: women and the politics of appearance (South End Press; 1985) and Live Sex Acts:

women performing erotic labor (Routledge; 1997). Her current research is on medical marijuana

use and the ‘‘War on Drugs’’ (Dying to Get High; co-authored with Richard Webb, New

York University Press, forthcoming).
