ABSTRACT

The Great Revolution of Iran gained victory in February 1978. As a result, the Pahlavi

monarchy collapsed and The Islamic Republic of Iran was established. By order of the

revolution’s leader, Imam Khomeini, a chamber called Majlise Khobregan (Chamber of

Elites) was established to prepare Iran’s constitution, which was approved in November 1979.

In the following section, I provide an overview of women’s social status in Iran and then

examine the areas of the constitution and penal law that pertain to women’s rights
