ABSTRACT
What happens when we ride a bicycle might form the basis of a highly technical lecture by a physicist … But if we sat a novice bicycle rider down and explained the skills involved we would not be helping him to ride. What we actually do is sit him on the bicycle and provide support – we hold on until he is ready to go it alone. (I believe we can apply just such a teaching method to children learning to read.)
