ABSTRACT

This case is appropriate for, but not limited to, courses in new ventures or small business, policy and planning, tourism, or adventure sports at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. This case introduces the process of environmental planning in using management tools to ensure responsible mountain biking behavior. It affords the students an opportunity to identify basic environmental control problems and recommend the application of good controls to assist in balancing economic goals with environmental concerns. Through discussion of the case, the students can also get a sense for extending environmental controls beyond the ecosystem in order to address the wants and needs of stakeholder groups. The Canadian Mountain Holidays (CMH) case, also an adventure tourism case, can be used in conjunction with this case. Its focus is on identifying the risk and then determining appropriate controls for a heli-skiing operation. The Treadsoftly cases have been used successfully in both graduate and undergraduate classes at a number of universities.
