ABSTRACT
At present there are various schemes afoot for reintroducing wolves and other large mammals – lynxes, beavers, wild boars – to parts of the United States, and indeed to parts of Europe. One such proposal, which at present is raising a lively discussion, is to bring back wolves to forests in the Adirondacks, in northern New York State. It seems interesting to consider the symbolism connected with such projects. I shall not try here to say anything about the practical issues involved because these must, of course, be left to people who have studied the facts. It is clear that there is much to be said on both sides.1 But I do want to say something at the outset about the interesting question of priorities.
