Conclusion: Unravelling the nature of Irish prison policy
Pages 10

This work has investigated the practice and nature of Irish prison policy since 1922. It has examined the various events that comprised that policy, the sources of influence and potential influence on that policy and the socio-political and cultural contexts in which such policy was made and was also shaped by. The form of policy analysis employed allowed the conflict and nuance of the years under assessment to be revealed, but some more general conclusions can also be drawn about the period studied. From a distillation of these assessments, three hallmarks or motifs of the period can be identified, under the broad rubrics of political imprisonment, penal-welfarism and politics.
