ALL media-informative (including news), persuasive, or entertaining, and regardless of the technology they employ-inevitably contribute to society’s expectations of what is “usual” or “normal,” often to an extent the public doesn’t fully realize. This is a complicated process, since the mass media simultaneously reflect and define the society and culture(s) in which they operate, as Lee Loevinger (1968) pointed out in an oft-quoted article.
