THE mass media in contemporary capitalistic societies are supported mainly by commercial advertising. The major exceptions in the United States are film, much cable television, books, and some magazines. This is so common and so well accepted that the few exceptions, such as Consumer Reports magazine, are noteworthy. Even public broadcasting, with its commercial underwriting and on-air “begathons,” often seems similar to commercial stations and their paid ads.
