ABSTRACT

Since there was no public outcry after the successful, but tactically insignificant, use of tear gas during the October 1965 operation in the Iron Triangle, the Pentagon notified General Westmoreland on November 3 that he could once again use riot-control agents to support general military operations in South Vietnam. They specifically limited the authorization to the tear agents CN and CS, continuing the ban on the more toxic vomiting agent DM. In January 1966, along with its continued use as a means of dealing with tunnels in the Iron Triangle, he authorized the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) to use it during Operation Masher-White Wing.1
