ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at organisational and leadership theory and the development of structures and a culture that can further integrate the project organisation and ensure its effectiveness. This leads to the concept of excel - lence or world class, which requires effective and ethical leadership. Project teams are usually made up from different functional departments within the same organisation or from other organisations who are brought together to deliver a specific project over a set period of time. The challenge in construc - tion projects is to develop a culture that integrates the various organisations involved and ensure that there is a synergy built up in the team that also removes opportunistic and adversarial attitudes. This is even more important with ongoing changes in construction to cope with aggressive economic conditions, address climate change and drive out waste. We examine this trend towards greater emphasis on integrated teams and collaborative rela - tion ships.
