Treatment and Related Programs

Treatment in correctional institutions involves all of the programs and services that bring socializing influences to bear on the inmate. Viewed comprehensively, it refers to all of the processes that promote the normal socialization of people in free society-such as schools, religion, and recreation-as well as the psychological, psychiatric, and social work services that are traditionally associated with the term treatment. To the extent that they contribute to the inmate’s socialization, a wide variety of factors can be broadly viewed as treatment-from the work habits learned in prison industries, to the educational credentials earned in GED classes, to the discipline instilled by compliance with institutional regulations.
