ABSTRACT
This work is a study within the spirit of Viner’s ‘third kind of rhetoric’ and most of its space is taken up with the development and application of a set of concepts which I claim to be useful for such a study. However, in this chapter and the next I shall limit myself to a discussion of some more general questions about evaluation and language, trying not to go into more detail than is necessary to provide a basis for later discussions.
