ABSTRACT
The years 1975-8 saw the Soviets losing ground in the Middle East, but gaining in the periphery: Afghanistan in the east, Ethiopia in the south and Libya in the west. Of the Arab countries, only the PDRY had close ties with the USSR, based not only on military cooperation but on a common ideology.
