ABSTRACT

In this chapter I would like address the question of psychoanalytic subcategories of depression, and to correlate and compare the conclusions reached, or implied, by object relations theorists such as Klein, Winnicott and Fairbairn with those of Freud's original conception. This comparison will then be broadened to a sample of writers representing other theoretical orientations within psychoanalysis concerning their considerations on subtypes. Some comments will also be made about how these subtypes overlap, or not, with DSM-IV categories.
