Children’s and parents’ holiday desires and motivations
Following on from Chapter 2, in which the socio-industrial construction of the happy family and good parent was discussed, this chapter focuses on understanding the nature of the holiday desires and motivations of children and their parents. Understanding the holiday desires and motivations of parents and children is important in order to provide experiences for them that satisfy the individuals and the family unit. In addition, understanding the holiday desires and motivations of children is arguably important for the future sustainability of destinations and attractions. This is based on the notion that leisure patterns and travel behaviour established during childhood may continue into adulthood (Pearce, 2005). While important in their own right, the desires and motivations of parents are examined in this book to understand how they relate to their children’s desires and motivations and impact upon the holiday experiences of this population.
