ABSTRACT
We can now proceed to examine the central fact of intentional communities-their ideologies. I say ‘central’ simply because it is around the ideology that the community’s intentionality is constructed; it is the tension between ‘pure’ ideology on the one hand and the demands of the real world on the other, and the way in which the communities have resolved this tension-or at times encouraged it-which tells us much about their ability to persist.
