ABSTRACT

On the last day of January 1960, the CBS television network broadcast a star-studded spectacular titled The Fabulous Fifties. The respected fi lm actor Henry Fonda narrated the program’s survey of “the ten years just left behind” as experienced through television. “This is you,” he told the audience, as the TV screen zoomed in on a camera lens before fading into a montage of the decade’s major events-from the realms of politics, news, and popular entertainment. Stars of music, theater, fi lm, and, yes, television mixed with heads of state and other newsmakers. Looking forward to the decade ahead, the program, which was sponsored by General Electric, also introduced the audience to the “GE Golden Value Line of the Sixties.”
