Goal setting is an effective means of starting a new journey when change is required. As with literal journeys, reasons for travelling vary from person to person; some want to leave a certain problem behind, others want to experience something new. Whichever is the driving force, the process of change is framed positively for coaching. So, whether an individual states that s/he wants to stop getting poor grades, for example, or whether it is improved grades that are required, the coach should always help the individual adjust the focus towards a more positive potential achievement, as in the second example.
