chapter  17
Assessing Your Agenda
Pages 5

As I have stated repeatedly throughout this book, we can’t fix our clients or make them stop the behavior before they are ready to do so, despite our best intentions. Alderman (1997) articulated this eloquently when she said, “You cannot make your clients stop injuring themselves-nor can you make them want to stop injuring themselves. All you can do is provide an atmosphere in which change is possible.” (p. 195). is can be hard to accept, but we will experience professional burnout unless we let go of this agenda.
