ABSTRACT

In Chapter 6 we examined how the various polymers of the wall are assembled outside the cell to form a coherent structure. And we saw how different kinds of walls are built using similar architectural principles. The rich diversity of walls is made even more complex when we take into account the heterogeneity within and between walls, even within a single cell or tissue type. The picture presented there was a relatively static one, but of course plants are living organisms whose key feature is their amazing dynamic growth and development. Bamboo can have a growth rate of four feet a day!
