ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I draw on conversations with several ‘local’ UK students conducted for various research projects, including one that was an investigation into potential barriers to postgraduate education as perceived – and/or experienced – by British minority ethnic postgraduates. I have decided to include the latter in order to explore the possible intersection between different agendas in higher education, influenced by the Equality Challenge Unit (ECU (2009)) report mentioned below. I am extrapolating selected extracts from longer conversations so that it appears as if the participants are speaking to one another in a television documentary programme. In this way, I am using a form of performative analysis (Riessman, 2008) through my ‘voiceovers’ as the presenter of the programme.
