ABSTRACT

The main topic of this chapter is intergroup negotiation or mediation is an essential part of most peace-making. Negotiation is communication between two or more parties aimed at reaching an agreement that will ameliorate or settle a conflict between them. Mediation is an extension of negotiation in which outsiders assist parties to reach agreement about a conflict they are having. Three other topics closely related to negotiation and mediation will also be discussed: intermediation, back-channel communication, and alternatives to diplomacy.
