Organizational Mnemonics

The main purpose of organizational mnemonics is to organize to-beremembered information in a way that facilitates remembering. Although we noted the importance of organization in preceding chapters, we have also argued that the mnemonic benefits of organization are fully realized only when it is combined with elaboration in a way that results in distinctive processing. Thus, mnemonics that rely predominantly on organization may be helpful in some situations, but their effectiveness is often limited unless they also incorporate mechanisms that encourage elaboration. In this chapter, we discuss mnemonics that rely solely on organization as well as mnemonics that serve primarily to organize information but also encourage a degree of elaboration.
