Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Open and Distance Learning

Applying QA and accreditation processes to open and distance learning (ODL) is

a relatively new phenomenon. This agenda is driven by the growing demand for

accountability and cost-effectiveness in education generally, the need to show that

the quality of ODL institutions, programmes and learning outcomes compares

well with more traditional systems and concerns over the entry of private for-

profit providers into the ‘market’. QA and accreditation in ODL can give rise to

some contentious issues. Distinctive factors and features need to be taken into

account and different approaches may be called for in the various international,

national, cultural and institutional contexts.
