ABSTRACT

This chapter is founded on the belief that music teaching and learning are most effective where teachers adopt an integrated approach. An integrated approach recognises that:

● children learn and experience music both within and beyond the school and these different learning contexts and occasions should inform planning for music learning in the classroom;

● musical learning is at its richest where children are immersed in music. Such immersion is best achieved through lessons which involve children in: ● all those aspects of what it is to be musical – composing, performing, listening and

responding – in an integrated way; ● a diversity of musical practices which reflect a range of musical styles and cultures.
