ABSTRACT

Asseeninchapter2,developmentalchangesinrationalityduringadolescencearedueinlargeparttoprogressinmetacognition,ourincreasing knowledgeaboutourownknowledgeandinference,andespeciallytothe developmentofepistemiccognition,knowledgeaboutthejustifiabilityofour beliefsandinferentialprocesses.Thereremainsthequestionofexplaining thedevelopmentofepistemiccognition.Anativistwouldsuggestthat epistemiccognitionisgeneticallyprogrammedtodevelopoveraperiodof timeextendingintoadolescenceandbeyond.Anempiricistwouldsuggest thatadvancedepistemicconceptionsarelearnedineducationaland/or otherenvironments.Aninteractionistwouldsuggestthatgeneticandenvironmentalfactorsinteractivelydeterminethecourseofdevelopment.
