ABSTRACT
The weaknesses of the dependency debate are closely related to its strengths, namely its interdisciplinary approach and its orientation towards long-term strategic policy issues. The ambitious interdisciplinary orientation invites oversimplification while the concern with strategic policy creates intense pressures to draw broad conclusions quickly, and to become committed to the conclusions once drawn. These shortcomings neither excuse the weaknesses, nor invalidate the approach.
