ABSTRACT

Law and order and the performance of the legal system are of great concern to British people and affect individuals at different levels in their daily lives. In recent years, these issues have been regularly towards the top of public opinion polls about the state of the country. They emphasize worries about the effects of crime, antisocial behaviour, drunkenness and unprovoked violence on the streets, yobbishness and the high incidence of these occurrences among young people. Government and legal structures have attempted to deal with these public concerns, but to little effect according to many people.
