ABSTRACT

Emily Dubberley, author of Brief Encounters: The Women’s Guide to Casual Sex, remarks that getting sex is now “like ordering a pizza . . . Now you can just go online and order genitalia”. Flirting, making passes, laborious and protracted efforts to earn reciprocity from the beloved are no longer needed; there is no need to work hard for the partner’s approval, no need to lean over backward in order to deserve and earn the partner’s consent, to ingratiate oneself in her or his eyes, and to wait a long time, perhaps infi nitely, for all those efforts to bring fruit. . . . That means, though, that gone are all such things that used to make a sexual encounter such an exciting event, because an uncertain event with an outcome hanging in the balance, and seeking such an event, was romantic, a risky and full of traps adventure. Something has been lost. . . .
