ABSTRACT

For the novice clinician and, at times, for the seasoned group therapist, starting off a new group can be quite challenging. A process group is by theory an unstructured event although preparation for it is very structured. When that initial organizing structure, for a process group, is not available, the clinician is not given the most efficacious opportunity to create something wonderful and therapeutic. As previously written the disclosure must be in service for the client and not for the therapist. Group allows the clients the opportunity to form multiple transferences in which to work through many of their previous difficulties and conflicts. Most of us have been trained to speak as little as possible in both individual and group therapy. The statements are related to an experience the therapist had as a group member and possibly the experience these new group members are experiencing in their first group thus normalizing their thoughts and feelings.
