The Etcher of Caprano
Ettore was born in the small city of Caprano, not far from Naples, in the hills.
Early he was drawn to etching. Caprano had a modest but long-standing repu-
tation as a center of fine engraving and etching, the legacy of the artistic passions
of an early duke who had brought to his employ and to his city the best engravers
that he could afford. Families of engravers still lived there, although the duke
was long gone; and while it would be too much to say that the craft flourished
in Caprano (very little did), it can be said at least that it remained.
