Curitiba and the Making of Community
In late 1974, after but a one-day visit to Curitiba, Brazil, it was possible to think
that this might be a city with a very different trajectory than other major and more
known cities in the country: Rio de Janeiro, São Paolo, Belo Horizonte, and, of
course, Brasilia. There are few cities with the setting, physical charm, spec-
tacular beaches, and fine old downtown of Rio de Janeiro. And there were then,
now too, few as intense and bustling, and bursting out and up, as São Paolo.
