Part I Experiencing Cities: An Introduction

This is a book born of growing up in what was once a real city, Cleveland, in the

1930s and early 1940s, and of being excited by visiting and learning how to get

around in cities, particularly New York City. It was nurtured by the experiences

of working in and for cities as a professional city planner-urban designer for

many years, and of continued travel in them and walking, walking, walking their

streets, all the time looking at what was to be seen, their physicality and the

people who inhabit them, of always asking why things are the way they are, and

of drawing and recording them, with some relentlessness.
