ABSTRACT

In my inquiry, I wanted to capture the climate and personalities of both students and teachers that are entangled in the many classes that pass through my door each day. I heard many comments indicating that students dreaded and even hated reading; I heard nothing but complaints and pangs about many of the novels selected for use in this classroom. Unfortunately, it seemed as though reading was being used a punishment for our students and we were dampening any sort of spirit or draw they might have towards books. We, as teachers, often feel dejected when our own enthusiasms for reading are rejected by students; imagine how students feel when their desire for reading is stifled before it even begins.
