ABSTRACT

These stories about children’s experience of divorce can be used to stimulate children to express their feelings about events that are happening in their own family. As children draw pictures of and discuss their own experiences, the therapist can validate and normalize their feelings, and this information can be shared with parents. The stories themselves provide parents with several suggestions on how to help their children cope with the many difficulties that they are likely to encounter as they go through the divorce process. The completed pictures can be compiled into a story notebook that can be sent home each week for parents to use with their children between sessions. These stories can be used in family therapy, individual child sessions, or groups for children coping with divorce.
