ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the treatment of changing capitalisms and neoliberalization within the literature before establishing a Gramscian historical materialist apparatus. My aim is to theoretically assess the problem outlined in Chapter 1. This problem has three skeins: first, in demystifying globalization I seek to elucidate the dynamics of neoliberalization as its driving force; second, I examine these dynamics within changing European capitalisms, asking why member states previously averse to neoliberalization have nonetheless engaged in it; and third, I focus on a specific historical moment, asking how these dynamics contributed to the recent change in pace and degree of EU financial market integration.
