ABSTRACT

In the previous chapters I have dealt with the basic structures and elements of workplace learning. However, before going on to consider learning at a more concrete and practical level, it is necessary to address the general question of the kind and quality of workplace learning that is needed today. As a central concept for this discussion I shall take up the issue of ‘competence development’. This is an important concept, and one currently much in vogue, because, when used correctly, it encompasses the most important qualities that workplace learning needs to include to be up-to-date not only in working life, but in modern life in general.
