ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the application of the principles of the UNCRC to social workers communicating with young children. Using the detailed case example of Aine (aged 7 years) and real-life excerpts of conversations with her, the chapter illustrates the stages of the communication process, the skills required to communicate effectively with young children and the ways in which both are embedded in a child rights approach. Exercises and general pointers for effective practice are also provided.
