ABSTRACT
The editors of this volume asked me to reflect on changes since the 1950s in my thinking about the relationship between bilingualism and cognition. A field then sparse has since blossomed. My 1955 dissertation on bilingual personality change with language was stimulated by the comment of a close college friend, a French bilingual poet, Jacqueline Bourguignon Frank, whose later poetry collection was called No One Took a Country From Me, that she felt like a different person in her two languages. More recently Anna Wierzbicka (1985) made the same comment about herself.
