ABSTRACT

Sue pulled into the parking lot in her white Mercedes with the Bose stereo system surrounding her, playing the elegant classical music she loved. She was wearing her favorite pink cashmere sweater and black leather pants that made her look like a million bucks. Sue laughed to herself as she thought of that analogy. Her credit cards had been maxed out in order to pull off such an impression and now she couldn’t even make the payments on those. Appearances were definitely deceiving. She watched as others began to get out of their cars and walk through the door in front of her. Sue thought, This is the stupidest thing I’ve ever done. I don’t belong here. She pulled out her cell phone to call her friend, Claire. She was going to propose that they meet at a quaint little bar she knew, have some drinks, go to a movie, and just relax. That was all she really needed, a break from the stress. However, when she punched in Claire’s number, the call wouldn’t go through, and she got a tinny voice instead of Claire’s informing Sue that her phone was no longer in service.
