ABSTRACT

Maryanne was young, vivacious, and full of hope when she met and married Tom. Both were in their early twenties and in college when the sparks flew in economics class. Maryanne had signed up for the class to fulfill her social studies requirement for her education degree. Tom had dreams of becoming a “business tycoon.” Maryanne had never dated much. She had always been a serious student with career goals in mind. When Tom insisted on walking her home from class every day, she was completely flattered. He was tall, muscular, and very handsome. His determined focus on his own career gave him a sense of maturity that was missing in many guys his age. From Maryanne’s perspective, Tom was the man of her dreams. He was the kind of man she thought would never give her a second look.
