ABSTRACT

Many schools in urban settings have large numbers of students who have been exposed to traumatic events (e.g., Stein et al., 2003) ranging from natural disasters (floods, earthquakes, fires, viral or bacterial pandemics, tsunamis, hurricanes, drought, tornadoes) to man-made disasters (chemical spills, automotive accidents) to issues of violence (family violence, community violence, gang violence, terrorist acts, wars). Despite the many differences between these types of traumatic events, there are also many shared aspects. Hence, there is much to be learned from the experiences of a wide range of urban schools that have faced such experiences.
