Describing Quantitative Data: Summary Statistics

In the previous chapter, we described procedures that could be used to process data in ways that would enable us to better understand a distribution of the scores in a holistic fashion. Specifically, we looked at tabular presentations (ungrouped and grouped frequency distributions, relative frequency distributions, and cumulative frequency distributions) and graphic presentations (histograms, frequency polygons, and stem-and-leaf displays). Toward the end of this chapter, we present another graphic format (box-and-whisker plots), which assumes an understanding of some of the material developed in this chapter.
