Chapter Teaching about the Culture of Peace as an Approach to Peace Education
If a sustainable peace depends on our intellectual and moral solidarity, peace education may want to develop this solidarity by building cultures of peace. This chapter begins by describing the concept of a culture of peace and how it may be measured. The results of measurement lead us to conclude that there are four dimensions to the peacefulness of cultures. Each of these dimensions suggests certain subject matter and approaches that should be covered in a comprehensive curriculum of peace education. Each also reveals speci c psychological tensions that require consideration. After these are described, I brie y consider a set of tools that are important for peace education and a set of templates that may involve students in assessing the degree to which they live in a culture of peace.
