ABSTRACT

Human resources management encompasses more than just staffing organizations with high quality employees. Functions such as compensation and benefits, training and development, affirmative action, and employee resource programs are typically housed in the HR office. These services are necessary for the successful operation of any complex organization. However, unlike much of the for-profit world, HR within higher education typically does not play an active role in the recruitment and retention of professional staff and faculty. Its role, while still important, is usually one of support and guidance rather than one of decision making.
