ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I consider the concept of acceptance as it pertains to holding a healthy attitude about adversity. I made the point in Chapter 2 that at the very heart of a psychologically healthy response to adversity is ¯exibility. I also stated in that chapter that three healthy beliefs stem from the philosophy of ¯exibility. These are non-awfulising beliefs (discussed in Chapter 3), discomfort tolerance beliefs (discussed in Chapter 4) and acceptance beliefs (which is the focus of the current chapter).
