ABSTRACT

Maria Nikolajeva and Carole Scott conclude their article “Images of the Mind: The Depiction of Consciousness in Picturebooks”: “[R]ecent picturebooks clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the form in combining words and images in a variety of ways to convey complex psychological states. [ . . . ] In this way we believe that picturebooks have achieved the goal which many modern writers have been striving for: to portray subverbal (nonverbal, preverbal) conditions of those whose language skills are limited” (Nikolajeva and Scott: 34-35). In their article they show how some of the contemporary picturebooks include a tendency towards a deeper psychological characterization instead of being action-centered. Nikolajeva and Scott consider picturebooks as the ultimate medium for this purpose as an image can describe emotions in a more effective way than words.
