ABSTRACT
The power of Rome in the early years and Middle Ages is universally known; in modern times, Rome has also experienced a great epoch of rejuvenated dominance over the world. After the decline of her importance in the fi rst half of the sixteenth century, she once more succeeded in becoming the center of faith and opinion of the Romanic nations of southern Europe, making bold and at times successful attempts to recover her dominion over those of the North.
